Music by Tatenda wekwaTenzi, a classically trained vocalist and multidisciplinary artist specialized in music, fashion and film.
As a Zimbabwean who has spent much of her life in South Africa, wekwaTenzi's work brings voice to the conflict often felt by African migrant bodies. As such, her work aims to explore a fusion of contrasting, often clashing, concepts; it is an intentional merger of ancient and contemporary ideas, traditional and modern practices, and thoughts of disillusion and hope.
Her sound is a calculated blend of indigenous poetry merged with biblical scripture, airy soprano vocals and a balance of passionate deep tones all wrapped into pulsing African rhythms. Taking after the style of African proverbs her lyrics are often simple on the surface with complex meanings. Her enchanting voice provides listeners with a space for deep contemplation whilst the pulsing rhythms prompt body movement- whether in the form of a gentle sway or a carefree get down, the listener is sure to feel moved.
