Girls Trip Tours published as case study in United Nations’ tourism course
In 2021, Rut Gomez Sobrino, a lecturer and development professional, was researching why the gender equality approach should be at the core of recovery strategies from the COVID-19 pandemic. She was interested in exploring what kind of gender policies and strategies can be applied to tourism recovery with the United Nations World Tourism Organization Academy. The UNWTO Academy is an online learning platform which provides self-paced online courses from the best universities in the world that mainly focus on concepts, areas of interest, and fundamental principles related to the tourism, hospitality, and destination management industries.
Ms. Sobrino invited Girls Trip Tours to participate as a case study in her UNWTO Academy course. The case study would reveal how gender equality solutions, like Girls Trip Tours’ women-driven ecosystem, have moved from an inspiring narrative to a real world application that other actors in the tourism sector can use to inform their practice.
The course was taught as part of a training program focused on the Latin American region and equipped nearly 50 policy officers in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Chile, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador with knowledge and tools that would help them think about how gendered solutions can support economic recovery in the tourism sector.
“Our inclusion in this case study confirms that Girls Trip Tours has created a unique regionally-contextualized solution to what is clearly a global problem. We are excited to scale our women-driven travel ecosystem and keep serving as an example of the social and economic impact that is made possible when women lead the agenda” - Eyitemi Popo, Founder, Girls Trip Tours
